Students in Grant, Klickitat, King, Kittitas, Pierce, and Yakima counties have a new option this summer: DiscoverWorks—a free, full-day program coordinated by the Association of Educational Service Districts (AESD) with funding from Ballmer Group.
What is DiscoverWorks?
DiscoverWorks gives students at eligible, participating schools hands-on activities, skilled instruction, and daily meals to build confidence and stay ready for the next school year. Students complete creative projects, take field trips, sharpen math and reading skills, and connect with peers in a safe environment.
Where is DiscoverWorks Offered?

After this pilot year, AESD and Ballmer Group intend to expand DiscoverWorks to more regions across the state.
How Can Families Sign Up?
Students currently enrolled at eligible, participating schools who will complete kindergarten through grade 8 by the end of the 2025–26 school year can attend. Families will be able to register through their school during conferences. Schools will share whether they are participating, which grade levels they will serve, where the program will be held, and how registration will be handled through their own systems. Because not all schools will offer all grade levels, and some programs may be hosted at a different school site, families should check directly with their school for details.
What Can Families Expect?
Students attend full-day programming that includes:
- Math and reading instruction with qualified staff
- Enrichment opportunities like STEM projects and field trips
- Free breakfast and lunch daily
- Small class sizes
- Pre- and post-assessments to track progress
Some programs may include:
- Before and after-program care for families who need it
- Transportation
DiscoverWorks was originally launched by Ballmer Group in Michigan in 2024. Students in Michigan’s program reported feeling safer, more cared for, and better prepared for the next school year.
Participating schools will share additional details as they become available.
